Requirements

Bergen corporation had database of more than 3000 Norway companies. They wanted a web interface to manage this database. There were three parts of the Vestnett project. 1) End user site 2) Vestnett admin section 3) Case / Correspondence system. End user site is open to all visitors to add / update their companies. Admin section is for Vestnett executives to update all company database. Objective of case system is to manipulate and direct users queries to respective executives. Correspondence system is to communicate between users to executives and between executives to executives. Also they wanted it to be quite flexible to support multiple languages.

Approach

We started the project, received their database in raw format. First of all we formatted their database in a uniform manner. Then we created database structure according to that database, wrote some scripts and populated the database. Then we created nice End User Interfaces to Add/Update/Search companies. Next challenges was Admin section, there were 3 types of Admins 1) Super User 2) Domain Admin 3) Local Admin.
SU was allowed to do any activity on the site.

Domain Admins were allowed only to update data added by Local Admins under their domain. Local Admins ware restricted only to play with company data under their Council. Each Admin activity is saved in database stamped with IP address, Executive user ID and timestamp. Case / Correspondence system just works like POP3 email system. This keeps records of User queries and relative correspondences.
